Amelia County
is nestled in the southern Piedmont region of Virginia. It's
beautiful countryside coupled with its close proximity to Richmond, our
state's capital, form a progressive, rural community. The County
encompasses 366 square miles and has a population of approximately
11,000.
Amelia County was
founded in 1734 and named after the youngest daughter of King George II.
Large tobacco plantations were established on the rich farmlands along
the banks of the Appomattox River which led many families to settle in
the area. The last major battle of the Civil War was fought near
the Hillsman House, now Sailor's Creek Battlefield Historical State
Park. Each year a realistic reenactment brings to life the battle
that led to General Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox only a few
days later. Residents and tourists can enjoy this event and also
follow the route of Lee's Retreat, a driving tour through six counties
from Petersburg to Appomattox.
Several historical
buildings in Amelia, including homes and churches, have been placed on
the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic
Places. The Amelia County Historical Library is an excellent
resource for researching and learning about the many other historical
details that comprise the rich heritage of our County.
Agriculture,
timber, and tobacco are important parts of Amelia's economy. The
County also has an industry base including textiles, office supplies,
lumber, and wood products. Manufacturing, trade, services, and
construction supplement Amelia's diverse economy.
Because Amelia
is located only 35 miles southwest of Richmond, the County has access to
road, rail, air, and port facilities. U.S. 360, which crosses
Amelia County and is one of Virginia's primary east-west arterial
highways, provides access to three interstate highway systems - I-95,
I-85, and I-64. Richmond International Airport offers commercial,
freight, and charter service. Amelia has a private airport with a
2,300 feet sod strip. The closest municipal airport is located 25
miles east in Chesterfield County. Bus service is provided along
U.S. 360 by Greyhound Bus Lines.
Amelia is a
wonderful place to live... the people are friendly and warm, and
the countryside is peaceful and beautiful. Annual events include
Amelia Day, the County Fair, the Bluegrass Festival, the Beef Festival,
and the Rock & Mineral Show. There are many civic and community
service organizations including the Lions Club, Ruritan Club, U.S.
Junior Chamber of Commerce (Jaycees), Masonic Lodge, V.F.W. and more.
